AASHE is a membership-based association of colleges and universities
working to advance sustainability in higher education in the
US and Canada. On the group’s website are many resources
to assist campus sustainability efforts, including a sustainability
policy bank, a campus sustainability professionals page, interest
groups, publications, classroom resources, and useful links
for virtually every aspect of campus operation.

for the Arts

Americans for the Arts is an organization for advancing the
arts in the United States. With 45 years of service and more
than 5,000 organizational and individual members and stakeholders
across the country, the group aims to foster an environment
in which the arts can thrive and contribute to the creation
of more livable communities.

for Community Health Improvement

The Association for Community Health Improvement is a national association
that promotes community health, healthy communities and community
benefit. The group convenes and supports leaders from the health
care, public health, community and philanthropic sectors to help
achieve shared community health goals, and work with hundreds of
members to strengthen community health through education, peer networking
and the dissemination of practical tools.

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is the national organization
that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks,
and their patients and communities. Close to 5,000 hospitals, health
care systems, networks, other providers of care and 37,000 individual
members come together to form the AHA.
American Libraries
Council-Libraries for the Future

Americans for Libraries Council (ALC) is a national nonprofit that
advocates for libraries at the national level and develops and promotes
programs aimed at realizing the potential of libraries in the 21st
century. The Council aims to encourage the public to view libraries
as national assets, essential for a healthy economy and vital democracy.
APPA

APPA is the association serving educational facilities professionals
(formerly the Association of Physical Plant Administrators). APPA’s
membership consists of more than 1,500 learning institutions encompassing
over 4,700 individuals throughout the United States, Canada, and
internationally.

Bank of America Foundation’s anchor institution program seeks
to support community stakeholders to further economic and community
development. Programs sponsored include cultural institutions (such
as theaters, performing arts centers, and zoos), hospitals, and

Catholic
Campaign for Human Development

Founded in 1969, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is
the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic
bishops. The grants, economic development, and education for justice
programs of the Campaign, implemented in collaboration with local
dioceses, are supported from an annual collection in U.S. Catholic
parishes.

Health Design

The Center for Health Design aims to transform health care settings
into healing environments that are better and safer places for patients
to heal and health care professionals to work. The current hospital
construction boom—projected to be more than $30 billion annually
in 2010—provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rethink
how hospitals are designed, and especially to consider how improved
hospital design can help reduce staff stress and fatigue, increase
staff's effectiveness in the delivery of patient care, improve patient
safety, reduce patient and family stress, and improve overall health
care quality.

CEOs for Cities is a group of more than 80 urban leaders, representing
26 of the nation’s cities that aims to foster urban development,
including the role played by anchor institutions. Members include
mayors, university presidents, foundation officials, corporate executives,
and heads of economic and civic development organizations.

Shapes Community

A joint program of the Ford Foundation and the nonprofit organization,
Partners for Livable Communities, Culture Shapes Community is an
initiative that supports art and cultural groups in neighborhoods
undergoing rapid demographic change. The program aims to assist
art and cultural institutions to promote neighborhood-based social
and economic development, give voice to the voiceless, and provide
opportunities for upward economic mobility.
Health Care Without
Harm

Health Care Without Harm is a global coalition of 443 organizations
in 52 countries. Coalition members include hospitals and health
care systems, medical professionals, community groups, health-affected
constituencies, labor unions, environmental and environmental health
organizations and religious groups. The organization aims to transform
the health care industry worldwide, without compromising patient
safety or care, so that it is ecologically sustainable and no longer
a source of harm to public health and the environment.

Connections—Annie E. Casey Foundation

Initiated in 1999, Making Connections is a 10-year program of the
Annie E. Casey Foundation, which involves a network of sites in
22 cities. In this program, the Casey Foundation, working in coordination
with local partners, aims to bring together residents, community
leaders, businesses, government officials, community groups, and
anchor institutions such as schools and faith communities to enhance
the effectiveness of local neighborhood revitalization efforts.

Marga is a consulting firm that addresses cross-sector partnerships,
philanthropy, strategy, and various aspects of management. Much
of Marga's work focuses on universities and their role as anchored
institutions and engines of economic development within the communities
in which they are located.
National Association
of Educational Procurement

Since the 1920’s, NAEP has been the non-profit professional
association primarily dedicated to serving higher education purchasing
officers in the U.S. and Canada. The group aims to promote effective
and ethical procurement principles and techniques within higher
education, through continuing education, conferences on such topics
as sustainability and minority contracting, networking, public information
and advocacy.

Collaborative

The National Rural Funders Collaborative is a philanthropic initiative
designed to leverage $100 million over ten years to support rural
communities and families facing persistent poverty. Recognizing
that private philanthropy cannot meet this goal alone, the groups
aims to use its funds to support developing that leverages anchor
institutions and other public and private resources at local, regional
and national levels.

Founded in 1981 to provide social services to at-risk youth, New Door Ventures (formerly Golden Gate Community, Inc.) began its social enterprise operations in 1990 as a means to provide job training and jobs to the at-risk population it serves. The nonprofit currently operates a bike shop (Pedal Revolution) and a print shop (Ashbury Images). During the period between 1998 and 2005, New Doors employed a total of more than 200 at-risk youth and young adults. Its social enterprises raise roughly $4 million or roughly 80 percent of its $5 million budget.

Partners for Livable Communities is a non-profit group founded in
1977 working to improve the livability of communities by promoting
quality of life, economic development, and social equity. Many of
its programs, such as its “Creative Cities” initiative
focuses on the role cultural institutions can play in anchoring

organization dedicated to the sound stewardship and active community
use of America's older religious properties. Founded in 1989 by
religious, historic preservation and philanthropic leaders, Partners
provides assistance to the people who care for sacred places and
promotes a greater understanding of how these places sustain communities.

Practice Greenhealth is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 2008 through the merger of three groups: Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E), the Green Guide for Health Care, and the Healthcare Clean Energy Exchange. The group works to educate health care professionals about pollution prevention opportunities and provides a wealth of practical tools and resources to facilitate movement in the health care industry toward environmental sustainability.

make the principles of sustainability the foundation of all learning,
practice, and collaboration with local communities.

Founded in 1987, Seedco (the Structured Employment Economic Development
Corporation), a national community development intermediary, creates
opportunities for low-wage workers and their families by engaging
with community partners and anchor institutions to develop, operate
and learn from model programs that help people join the workforce
and achieve economic self-sufficiency, assist small businesses,
and promote asset building for residents and businesses in economically
distressed communities.
U3 Ventures

U3 Ventures is a consulting firm that works with urban university
clients, with the aim of channeling their real estate development
to support both institutional and community objectives. U3 Ventures
has worked in a number of cities to date, including Denver, Philadelphia,
and Calgary.
